Estos espacios, que se suman a los 49 ya existentes en la comunidad con este nivel de protección, albergan valores ambientales de notoriedad.
En concreto, se han reconocido tres áreas de carácter geológico, el Peñón de Bernal y los Canales de Padules, en la provincia de Almería, y las Huellas Fósiles de Medusas de Constantina (Sevilla); dos de tipo biótico, las encinas de la Peana y del Marchal del Abogado, también en Almería; cuatro mixtos, la Cueva del Hundidero y el Monte Jabalcuza, en la provincia de Málaga, la Cueva del Agua de Tíscar (Jaén) y el Nacimiento de Riofrío (Granada); y uno ecocultural, el Tajo de Ronda (Málaga).
Además, el Gobierno andaluz ha ampliado los límites de Encina de la Dehesa de San Francisco, ubicada en Santa Olalla del Cala (Huelva) y cuya denominación será a partir de ahora Encina y Alcornoque de la Dehesa de San Francisco.
Los nuevos monumentos declarados por el Consejo de Gobierno se suman a otros 49 ya reconocidos en Andalucía, cuya superficie total supera ahora las 1.556 hectáreas, frente a las 1.368 hectáreas protegidas anteriormente.
Los monumentos naturales, tal y como recoge la normativa en vigor, son espacios o elementos de la naturaleza constituidos básicamente por elementos de notoria singularidad, rareza o belleza que merecen ser objeto de protección especial, así como las formaciones geológicas, los yacimientos paleontológicos y demás elementos de la gea que reúnan un interés especial por la peculiaridad o importancia de sus valores científicos, culturales o paisajísticos.
Peñón de Bernal (Almería)
Se encuentra ubicado en la Zona Especial de Conservación (ZEC) Sierras de Gádor y Énix, concretamente entre los términos municipales de Vícar, Dalías y El Ejido. Destaca por el alto valor geológico de su entorno y las vistas que ofrece del Poniente Almeriense.
Canales de Padules (Almería)
Situado en los municipios de Almócita y Padules, entre la Sierra de Gádor y Sierra Nevada, resalta por las llamativas formas de erosión hídrica y el relieve abrupto en el que queda encajonado el río Andarax entre dos altas paredes de roca. Este relieve crea una red de pequeños lagos abrigada por árboles y grandes zonas de sombra.
Huellas Fósiles de Medusas (Sevilla)
El Parque Natural Sierra Norte de Sevilla incluye el yacimiento paleontológico de este nombre ubicado en Constantina, donde se encuentra una superficie de piedra con 550 millones de años de antigüedad que supone el mayor conjunto de fósiles cámbricos de Europa. En total son 120 metros cuadrados con 90 fósiles de medusas en buen estado de conservación.
Encinas de la Peana y del Marchal del Abogado (Almería)
Ambos árboles son ejemplares milenarios de la Sierra de los Filabres y se encuentran actualmente en el municipio de Serón. La Encina de la Peana está considerada como el árbol más grande de Andalucía según el catálogo elaborado por la Consejería de Agricultura, Ganadería, Pesca y Desarrollo Sostenible, mientras que la del Marchal del Abogado se reconoce como Monumento Natural en base a su gran porte y la amplia superficie que abarca su copa.
Cueva del Hundidero (Málaga)
Ubicado en el municipio de Montejaque, el monumento natural comprende tanto la boca de la Cueva del Hundidero como el río Guadares y parte de sus riberas. Esta cavidad alberga una de las mayores colonias sedentarias de murciélagos cavernícolas.
Monte Jabalcuza (Málaga)
Situado en el término municipal de Alhaurín de la Torre, se distinguen mármoles dolomíticos blancos y azules y un suelo especial conocido como terra-rossa, debido a su alto contenido de arcilla. Es un punto estratégico, desde el que se visualiza el cordón montañoso litoral y el valle del Guadalhorce y donde destaca un relieve alomado que llega hasta la línea de costa.
Cueva del Agua de Tíscar (Jaén)
Se trata de una profunda garganta ubicada en el término municipal de Quesada y formada por la erosión del río Tíscar, por donde transcurren sus aguas mediante saltos, cascadas y fuentes antes de concluir en el conocido como Pilón Azul, cerca de la aldea de Belerda.
Nacimiento de Riofrío (Granada)
Situado en el territorio de Loja, en épocas de precipitaciones abundantes pueden afloran desde este acuífero más de mil litros por segundo. Sus corrientes subterráneas mantienen el agua a una temperatura constante de 14 grados centrígrados durante todo el año y supone un enclave especialmente favorable para las piscifactorías de truchas y esturiones que se encuentran aguas abajo.
Tajo de Ronda (Málaga)
Se trata de una impresionante formación geológica creada por la acción erosiva del río Guadalevín durante milenios en el término municipal de Ronda. Destaca además la importante colonia de cernícalo primilla que habita en sus riscos y escarpes.
